Do you display your family tree in your home? I have a huge wall display of photos, but I didn’t actually have a family tree chart on display… until now! I was recently given the opportunity to create some custom family tree charts from Family Tree Prints. Family Tree Prints – A Review
Family Tree Prints is a website that generates customizable family tree charts. The charts come in several dozen color combinations and designs, including fan charts and circle charts. As I looked through the options, I was pleased to see that several color combinations would work well with my home decor. My children immediately found and really liked the Themed charts, which are shaped like animals.
After choosing your chart design, it is time to add your family tree to the chart template. You can enter your ancestors’ information right into the chart on the website, import a Gedcom file, or you can login to your FamilySearch account and have the family tree imported. I chose the easy and quick FamilySearch import option.
Then you select the person that you want to start with on the chart, and the number of generations (from 3-10) you want on the chart. The number of generations you add to your chart determines the price of the download.
3-5 generations cost $19
6-8 generations cost $29
9-10 generations cost $39
This price is for a single style chart with the single tree configuration you add to it. This price is for a high resolution file download, suitable for printing up to 36″ x 24″. This price DOES NOT include any physical printed chart.
Our Chart Order
My younger children all agreed that they wanted a Tracing Toucan themed chart. I started the chart with my husband and I, so it would show all of the ancestry of our children.
I chose a circle chart with a blank space in the middle so I could print a chart for each child and add their name to the middle. I figured my older children might like a simpler chart better than a themed chart.
Third, I created a chart with my parents as the first couple with a blank space for a child under them. This chart will be great to print for each of my brothers as a Christmas gift.
Once we completed our order, the high-resolution files were available for immediate download. I downloaded the files and sent them straight to the photo printer. I ordered an 11″x17″ poster print of the Toucan chart for the children’s rooms. The fan chart starting with my parents was printed on an 11″x17″ foam board.
We were very pleased with the quality of the charts and enjoyed placing them on display in our home.
Review Summary
Cons:
In my opinion, the price point for this product is high since it is a file download and I still have to physically print the chart. However, I own the rights to the file once I have purchased it, so it can be reused for several projects. If you create a chart in such a way that it can be printed and given as a gift to multiple people in your family, the price seems more reasonable per person.
Pros:
- Family Tree Prints has plenty of designs to please anyone’s design aesthetic.
- The website is easy to navigate and the charts were simple to create and customize.
- The chart creation was especially smooth with the FamilySearch integration.
- My kids were excited to choose one of the Themed chart styles. Thankfully several of them liked the same design, and can’t wait to hang their “Tracing Toucan” in their rooms!
Overall, we had a good experience designing family tree charts with Family Tree Prints. I will be printing additional charts from the downloads for my family members’ Christmas gifts this year.
